Humm??? What's that??
The colour... Look like Tom Yum??
Nope!! If in Thailand got Tom Yum,
Sour Soup??
Yes!! Or... Well, I should say that that's how I translate it. Haha ~(^@^)~
[Mom's Special: Sayur Asam] (c) Mink ~!(^@^)!~ |
Sayur Asam
This is how it called in Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language).
If we are to translate it, Sayur means Vegetable in English while Asam means Sour.
Instead of naming it Sour Vegetable, I prefer calling it as Sour Soup!!
I see a lot of vegetables inside, what are those?
Let's take a peek closer to the Ingredients!

[Ginger torch] |
- And other spices which of course includes Chili, Onions, Belacan (Indonesian typical Shrimp paste), and other spices and seasonings.
It look similar to Tom Yum, except the ingredients of course, is it taste like Tom Yum?
Well, it is sour and mildly spicy. But as the main ingredients are all vegetables, I would say that the taste is totally different from Tom Yum which mostly uses seafoods for cooking.
It is not as sour and spicy as Tom Yum so I bet it could be easily accepted by most people stomach. Although, some restaurants might tend to cook it to be more sour.
Sour soup is a very typical Indonesian Sundanese food.
Almost all restaurants serving Sundanese foods in Indonesia will have this soup in their menu.
So, by any chance if you are coming to Indonesia, make sure that you don't miss this great appetizer to be in your MUST TRY food lists!
Selamat Makan!!
(Means: Enjoy your food!)
